Property tax appeals in Virginia
Virginia is on our waitlist: we're not filing here yet. You can still ask us to look at a property, and we'll tell you what we find and whether we can act on it.
Appeal deadline
Set by each city or county — most fall in the months after reassessment notices are mailed
The usual deadline. The notice your county sends always governs.
Appeals go to: Local assessor, then the local Board of Equalization
How the process typically works
- Most localities start with an administrative review by the assessor's office.
- If that doesn't resolve it, the owner appeals to the local Board of Equalization.
- Beyond the board, an owner can take the assessment to circuit court.
What we’d need from you
- A signed authorization naming your representative on the appeal.
- For income-producing property, the income and expense statements the locality requests.
