Property tax appeals in New York
New York is on our waitlist: we're not filing here yet. You can still ask us to look at a property, and we'll tell you what we find and whether we can act on it.
Appeal deadline
Grievance Day — the fourth Tuesday in May in most towns. New York City: March 1 (March 15 for Class 1 homes)
The usual deadline. The notice your county sends always governs.
Appeals go to: Board of Assessment Review (towns and cities); New York City Tax Commission
How the process typically works
- Outside New York City, an owner files a written complaint (Form RP-524) with the local Board of Assessment Review by Grievance Day.
- In New York City, the challenge is an application to the Tax Commission.
- If the board denies the complaint, owners of homes can go to Small Claims Assessment Review; other property goes to court under a tax certiorari proceeding.
What we’d need from you
- A signed authorization naming your representative on the complaint.
- Income and expense information for income-producing property, where the board asks for it.
